Fu nu jie kuai le! [沒有發現關於] – literally ‘female adult holiday happy!’ or… Happy Women’s Day!
I’m used to seeing International Women’s Day as a proponent of change and advocacy and as a means to celebrate the women of yesterday, today and tomorrow. All very good things of course, but today I saw International Women’s Day celebrated on such a personal level that if shifted my view of the holiday. I’ve read that in China, March 8th is marked as a national holiday and although not every woman gets this day off work, many women do. Many more women are given extra long lunch breaks, early finishes to the day and organized meals with their female co-workers and friends ( I wasn’t though! sigh). Today, Dalian seemed to be alive with women spending time together. Restaurants and coffee shops were much fuller and much livelier then normal, with large groups of women, talking, laughing and genuinely enjoying one another company. After observing this, it occurred to me that there may be no better way to celebrate International Women’s Day, then to simply enjoy time with the women who shape and change your life.
Today made me think about the women I love and how incredibly thankful I am for the beautiful, strong and intelligent individuals who grace my life with their presence and companionship and who offer me guidance and inspiration by simply being who they are and allowing me to be a part of it.
To the women of the world – Fu nu jie kuai le.
