Really though you don’t want to catch this fever.
I stole the title of this post from Neil’s fantasy hockey league….Yes I think that makes me double the geek for hijacking the slightly lame title of an imaginary league, but it was just so catchy! Had to be done. If you haven’t caught on by now, Lahore is having some serious problems with Dengue fever.
Here are the fast facts.
– Dengue fever is born from the bite of an infected mosquito.
– Dengue mosquitos breed and multiply in still water (any still water…flower vases, glasses of water, puddles etc.)
Unfortunately at the current moment Lahore has prolonged monsoon rains, long ditches of muddy-water filled canals and poor drainage systems. This all conspires to create one perfect city-wide copulating ground for these little suckers. As of yesterday the Punjab province of Pakistan ordered the closure of all educational facilities (including the non-willing and only partially compliant privet ones) for twelve days. Officially 20 people have died and over 8,000 have been affected…unofficially we know the numbers are always much higher. For now this means a couple days off school for the students (but not for the teachers. ugh.), trying to keep bare skin to a minimum (not so much of a problem in a conservative Muslim country) and crossing fingers that no one else loses their life.
